Re-Visit Weekend

As the new first years are coming in without a proper tour of Santa Barbara, we'd like to extend our welcome during Re-Visit Weekend, where we get to do all the activities that didn't quite work out by Zoom! This is a great opportunity for new and old students to get out of the lab and enjoy some of Santa Barbara's best things to do. Please RSVP here if you plan to attend any of the events. We plan on carpooling from San Clem, with priority for carpool spots given to the first year students. Feel free to reach out to organizers with any questions. Expect to hear more details from the organizers of each respective event closer to the date.

Hike in San Marcos Foothills: Saturday, Sept. 18

Organizer(s): Scott Berens/Lillian Hughes
Contact Info: swberens@ucsb.edu / lbhughes@ucsb.edu
Meeting Location/Time for carpooling: San Clemente Parking Lot 51, 8:30 AM

San Marcos Preserve is a hiking area nestled in the foothills of our nearby mountains that features some great views of the ocean! The main trail is about a 4 mi loop and moderate in difficulty. We suggest bringing some snacks, sun protection, and plenty of water for the hike.

Downtown Sightseeing: Saturday, Sept. 18

Organizer(s): Nick Combs/Ash Patterson
Contact Info: ncombs@ucsb.edu / ashleapatterson@ucsb.edu
Meeting Location/Time: San Clemente Parking Lot 51, 4 PM

We will finish out the afternoon with sightseeing around downtown Santa Barbara. We will begin at the courthouse, walk down State Street, and end up in the Funk Zone, stopping at a few breweries, wineries, and restaurants along the way. Please be aware that you are responsible for all food and beverage purchases. We can attempt to accommodate various tastes (i.e. more wine-centric for some, beer-centric for others) if we have a large enough group.

Kayaking/Paddle Boarding in the Santa Barbara Harbor: Saturday, Sept. 25

This Saturday, 9/25/21, is our last event for the Re-Visit Weekend! Come join us for kayaking/paddle boarding (SUP'ing) on Saturday, at 11am in the harbor at Santa Barbara Sailing Center.

If you are new to water sports and/or this is your first time out on the water in the harbor, we would recommend opting for a kayak because they have a little more maneuverability and there's not the added challenge of balancing. Regardless of what you are using please bring a change of clothes; the kayaks are known to get your bum wet and there's always the risk of falling in on a SUP.

We plan to be out on the water for around an hour (or more if everyone is up for it) and we expect to see boats, seals, (maybe) dolphins, and plenty of birds! Rental rates are: $12/hr for Single Kayaks, $24/hr for Double Kayaks, and $18/hr for SUP's. Because we are reserving before Saturday you can either bring cash or reimburse us with Venmo.

We are planning to get lunch somewhere in the funk zone afterwards. We are excited to see you there!
